Ridge Forrester - the heir to the Forrester throne, the son who went in Eric's footsteps and became a top designer like him - is also the son who managed to hurt Eric the most. Please don't get me wrong, Ridge loves his father very very much, but that love doesn't stop him from hurting him.
Ridge demonstrated his love to his dad first when he tried to keep Thorne from telling their mother that Brooke is the mystery woman in Eric's life, arguing in favor of Eric's right for happiness so he will get his quickie divorce.
And later, after Caroline death, when he resisted Stephanie's pleas to go after Brooke, and by convincing Brooke that for Eric's sake she must marry Eric.
At that time Eric was so sure of Ridge's love and loyalty for him that he didn't realize how much his son is still in love with his new wife (Brooke) till it was too late.
If Ridge was so convinced that Brooke belongs with Eric, as he repeatedly told Stephanie, he shouldn't have gone to Brooke on the day before her wedding and kiss her passionately.
